The action „Selection” consisted in the introduction of the element which will introduce the feeling of safety and anxiety at the same time.
The members of the ikoon collective, dressed in equal uniforms, played the bodyguards - selectors.
We were standing at the entry to the room, according to certain, well-known only only for us rules, It depended only form us or " we let in or not" to cafe/office space called UPMOLEN. Our project founded participation both persons which were interested in the project UNPOLEN and also accidental people . We wanted to reproduce the specific atmosphere of discomfort, which accompanies intercourse with the culture within the institution often or sometime national galleries.
We desired to create the situation which would cause both confusion, frustration of the people who were not let in but at the same time a larger desire to get in and participate in something elitist . Only people who were let in could see the video performacnes where members collective - selectors are making the absurd pracitses which have to prepare them to straightforward chellange with importunate people who did not pass our selection.

The situation in which we found ourselves as a collective ( we had been invited by the institution ) which gave us a certain power of which we became dissidents . We could decide about „who can and who can not”. We used the simple mechanism to get the power : uniforms and simple emblems. Because of that there was several of us dressed in same uniforms wiht the same emblems it autmatically started typical behaviours of many of people. We wanted to tear of the masks in other way too, thats why we decided while duration of the action mebers of ikoon collective will hang the portraits of themself like the superstars do . Every single portrait was called to mind pictures of famouse people of popculture, music , film. The pictures which you can find in jazz cafes and also in big clubs like Hard Rock Cafe. On every portrait each member of ikoon left an autograph with signature : „In Poland I'm nobody”.

Biurokawiarnia UMPOLEN is the newest artistic project of Polish Institute in Vienna. It will be realized on the breakthrough of April and May 2007 in the heart of the Vienna, at the space of the space MuseumQuartiers . Under a sign board UMPOLEN is hiding a less or more escaping from under the control series loosely connected multidiscplinary actions whicha are taking a place in one of halls MQ – Freiraum. The main role of the Biurokawiania UMPOLEN is beeing an office Space of The Polish institute of Culture is currently renovated. Thats why it will be transfered with personnel , pices of furniture , fax and even driver . The second idea of UMPOLEN is to make that space also a cafe . In the Polish case "landing" is a obvious connexion with is de-mythologized in our history of Viennese Relief in 1683 and joining to this event a tale about the beginnings of Viennese cafes. The legend tells, that our countryman Francis of Jerzy Kulczycki (in german Kolschitzky) - the participant of the relief discovered the first in Vienna Kafehauz. People says that he used a coffe derelict by running away after the battle Turks. In the connection to this legend The Polish Institute of Culture wants to lead a provisional cafe . The kind of the temporary, self-appointed artistic lounge, where poeple spends the time (but and he also wastes), exchanges the rumours, meet new people, dances and at last presents new, not necessarily well-known beyond the borders of the Poland art, design and music with special regard . To the guest visits will be invited artists from Germany , Austria and Turkey. The project UMPOLEN will be realized on elastic rules of „open house”, inviting artists for few days residences: workshops, the demonstrations of the video art , introductions , discussions which are preapared and lead by guests of biurokawiarni
will be hold on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Thursdays will be given to mans of letter, weekends will have the musical character:experimental electronic music, DJ sets and jazz improvisation.
